It is with great pleasure that we present herewith the teaching programme Archaeology / Egyptology of the Netherlands Institute for Archaeology and Arabic Studies in Cairo (NIAASC). This programme forms an integral part of the study programmes in Egyptology and Egyptian archaeology at Leiden University, while it has been accepted as an optional course for advanced undergraduates and PhD students by most other universities in the Netherlands and Flanders. After a successful start of this programme in the Dutch language, it has been decided to optimize the potential of this course by teaching the seme in English and accepting studente from universities outside the Netherlands and Flanders. The Netherlands Institute staff will provide an assessment in accordance with the specific university's format at the end of the course.

For 1996, two programmes trave been scheduled: a spring programme of eight study weeks (equivalent of 320 working hours) from 25 March to 25 May, and an autumn programme of 14 study weeks (560 working hours) from 9 September to 14 December. The latter repeats the programme of the spring course with the optional addition of a component of practical field work.

The maximal number of participants will, for now, be kept at sixteen only, and a selection will therefore be made by the NIAASC on the basis of thc previous experience of the students who apply. Applications should list the educational background of the student and should be accompanied by a letter of recommcndation from a staff member of the university department involved.

Applications for the spring programme of 1996 should reach us by mail or fax by November 1, 1995. Applications for the autumn programme of 1996 should be submitted by December 1,1995.

For further information or additional copies of leaflets, please contact the Institute. We are looking forward to your reaction and hope for a fruitful future cooperation with your department.

Dear Prof. Orlandi, I wonder if you as Editor of I.A.C.S. Newsletter might be able to stimulate some interest in the project to compile a Lexicon of Greek Words in Coptic, first announced in ZAS (1969 ?) by Hans Weiss. I myself have made several attempts at securing information from various sources in Germany, e.g. M. Krause and P. Nagel, but without much success. The most I have learned so far, from Krause, is that the project announced by Weiss was apparently to be based on work done in the 1950's by Böhlig; but, for several reasons, no more work seems to have been added to that already done by Böhlig. The project seems, to all intents and purposes, defunct, and this seems to me a pity.

Since an enterprise of this nature is probably too large for one person, I imagine that it would be a matter of collaboration between various scholars. If the project were to be based in Germany, one might turn for financial subsidy in the first instance to a German Foundation (DFG, Volkswagenwerk etc.). But the first thing to do, I guess, is to formally establish a project, with an editor/committee etc.

I am certainly interested in contributing to some such project.

This is a list of academic institutions where Coptic language, or literature, or art, or archaeology, or theology, etc., are taught. The colleagues are kindly requested to send information on this subject. The best way to send information is e-mail; short of that, please send a typescript so good as to be easily read by a scanner. This will very much speed the work. The list will be published periodically in the Newsletter.

The Editor has initially listed the courses of which he had become aware. This information is far from complete and up to date, but it will become hopefully so, with the help of the colleagues. Places are also mentioned, where courses might be held, in order to solicit a statement from the colleague mentioned. In this case the item is closed by an interrogation mark.
